They were both abandoned and facing an uncertain future. In the midst of their circumstances, a dachshund and a cat found refuge in a friendship that now inspires the people around them.

The two were taken in by staff from Animal Services, who found them in a driveway. One of the things rescuers noticed was that the dachshund and the cat were inseparable. Seeing their unusually sweet bond, the rescuers named the dachshund Idgie and the cat Ruth based on characters from the movie ‘Fried Green Tomatoes.’

Idgie was very protective of her friend. Whenever new dogs were brought to Animal Services, the dachshund would be standing guard beside Ruth in case a dog decided to attack her.

Idgie always made sure Ruth was in good condition. She also shared her toys with the cat.

Ruth enjoyed all the love and attention that her best friend gave her. And even though the cat’s hind legs were paralyzed, she wasn’t a sad cat at all. Ruth played with Idgie and the shelter staff all the time.

Usually, the shelter would try to match the animals in their care with prospective adoptive parents. However, in the case of Idgie and Ruth, they didn’t do so. They loved the pair so much that they themselves adopted the dog and cat.

They provided a kennel that the two animals shared. The kennel was large enough for both of them, giving them a lot of room to move and play around. Idgie and Ruth thrived in the love of their fourteen human moms, who took care of them at the shelter.

Sometimes, people would visit the shelter just to see the two best friends. They often gave gifts, such as toys, for Idgie and Ruth.

The strong bond between the dachshund and the cat continues to amaze the people around them. Watch their inspiring story in the video below.
