When we are out exploring the ocean, we either find dolphins, orcas, and other sea creatures playing within the vicinity. But a group of oil rig workers 135 miles from the shore saw another mammal that was not supposed to be there — a dog.

Vitisik Payalaw, one of the rig workers, was surprised to see the dog paddling near where they were working. He was shivering, and they had no idea how he got there.

The workers immediately took action and helped the poor pup. They took out a pole and put it down, but the dog couldn’t grasp it well because of the strong waves.

They changed plans and instead lowered a rope around the pup. They were successful this time, and they were able to put the dog in a safe place in their working area.

Vitisik saw how tired the dog was. The workers dried him up, gave him water and electrolytes, and named him “Boonrod” which means “survivor” in their language.

The dog looked at his rescuers with grateful, but sad eyes. “It’s like he wanted to tell us how tired he is, and he wants to go home. It broke our hearts,” Vitisik said.

All the dog did was to rest in their working area as he waited to be transported back to dry land. Up to this day, it is still a mystery as to why he ended up in the middle of the ocean, but we are all glad that he is safe.

As soon as he arrived at the shore, a group of doctors was already waiting for him so they can check his health. The other locals also welcomed him by preparing a flower necklace and placing it around the dog’s neck. He was happy about it.

Right now, Boonrod is recovering well in an animal shelter in Songkhla, Thailand. Vitisik regularly posts updates about the pup on his Facebook account. “Boonrood is now getting better, and is already smiling,” he said in one of his posts.

Vitisik said that he would adopt Boonrod if nobody claims him as their pet. A huge thanks to these workers for their big heart! Check out the video below to see the rescue in action:
