Dog lovers allergic to dogs may sound a bit of an oxymoron. But these individuals are more prevalent than you might think. In fact, they comprise at least 25% of dog parents. If you happen to belong to this somewhat anomalous demographic, there is no reason to be disheartened. You can still pursue your love of dogs, without totally harming your immune system.

Hypoallergenic Dogs

Hypoallergenic dogs is yet another oxymoronic-sounding phrase. Yes, all dogs happen to produce allergens. Although there are some breeds that could prove less of a problem in terms of shedding. These dogs are safer for dog lovers prone to allergic reactions. Here is a list of breeds you must check out:

  • Bedlington Terrier
  • Kerry Blue Terrier
  • Chinese Crested
  • Schnauzer
  • Poodle
  • Bichon Frise
  • Xoloitzcuintli
  • Maltese
  • Irish Water Spaniel
  • Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier
  • Portuguese Water Dog

Allergies are not caused solely by dander. Dogs also give off allergens through their saliva and urine. Some dog breeds are more notorious in giving off these allergens compared to other kinds. Here is a list of these canine breeds:

  • Dachshunds
  • Basset Hounds
  • Springer Spaniels
  • Golden Retrievers
  • West Highland White Terriers
  • Labrador
  • Cocker Spaniels
  • German Shepherds

If your allergies are not enough to prevent you from picking any of these aforementioned furries, you can at least make sure to do these tips in order to safeguard your health:

  • Train your dog not to jump onto upholstered furniture and keep them off your bedroom. These places is where you spend most of your time hence you must keep them safe from allergens.
  • If you’re the type of dog owner who can’t leave your dog out of your sight even during sleep time, at the very least ensure that your beddings and pillow cases are washed regularly.
  • Equip your air-conditioning with a filter that reduces allergens in the air.
  • Equip your house’s living spaces, such as bedrooms, with air purifiers.
  • To reduce the amount of shedding inside your house, play your dog/s outdoors.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after bonding with your dog. If you have yet to wash your hands, do not rub your face with your fingers.
  • Your dog’s bathtime should be done at least weekly. Pick a moisturizing shampoo for dogs from your local pet shop.
  • Entrust your dog’s grooming to an expert. If not possible, do your dog’s grooming routine outdoors.
  • Easy-to-clean flooring should be on top of your options. These include tile, laminate, or hardwood. Rugs or carpets worsen the presence of allergens.
  • Pick wood or plastic window blinds, which are easier to clean, as opposed to fabric curtains.
  • Pick machine-washable beddings and sofa covers/cushions.
  • Seek the advice of an allergist. They may prescribe the use of allergy shots, nose sprays, antihistamines, or immunotherapy.

Just because your allergic to dander does not mean you cannot love dogs. If anything, raising one despite your situation only speaks of your utmost dedication to the canine breed. Surely they are no less than happy and thankful in return. Now give your dog a hug.
